Spelt Macaroni
This is one of the most nutritious pastas I learnt.. And its nutty, naturally sweet flavor is also very pleasing to my 3.5years old's palate. I make it either in creamy sauce or simply, in chicken clear soup. Oh, I paid $6.80 for this pack of 375g at Bunalun, and can be found in most other organic stores.
Spelt is commonly used in cereal and is somewhat similar to wheat. A very healthy grain that is high in fiber and protein. For more info on its nutritional value, click here.
Spelt Macaroni in Chicken Soup
Ingredients/Prep(for a 3.5year old child)
0.5 Chinese Rice Bowl of Spelt Macaroni/Cook in boiling water for about 10-15minutes or until softened then drain, and add a dash of Mild Olive Oil, toss well.
50-60g Chicken Fillet/Cut into cubes and marinate for about 15minutes with 1tsp sesame oil, 1tsp light soya sauce, 0.5tsp corn flour and a dash of pepper.
2tbs Canned or Frozen Corn Kernels(can be replaced with Chickpeas, Kidney Beans, Garden Peas or Sugar Beans)/Rinse and drain.
A Handful of Purple Leafy Spinach(can be replaced with other leafy veg)/Wash clean and use hand to pluck into pieces.
300ml Chicken or Pork Stock(can be replaced with clean tap water, just less flavorful)
Cook
1. In a pot using medium heat, bring the stock to boil then add the marinated chicken cubes and cook for a few minutes or until the chicken cubes turn white. Keep stirring while it simmers.
2. Add the corn kernels and the spinach, continue to simmer for about 2-3 minutes.
3. Add the softened macaroni, bring to boil then remove from heat. Serve warm.
Try the creamy version, simply replace the spaghetti with this spelt macaroni and to make the creamy cheese sauce, click here..
Remarks
For 10-12months old Babies: There is no need to marinate the chicken cubes. Blend the dish after it is cooked before feeding.
For 12-18months old Toddlers: Marinate the chicken if desired but consider halving every marinate ingredients used. Do not blend the food, just use a fork and mash to lumpy texture.
For Adult's Consumption: For more flavor, add a dash of salt and another teaspoon of sesame oil into the dish when it's simmering.

Hi
My daughter just turn 1 yr old. She has 8 teeth, 4 upper, 4 lower. no molars yet...taking porridge now.
I would like to ask your advise on the following.
1) Can i add oil into her food now, example frying fish strips, eggs etc? If not, when?
2) Is the Brand Knife oil alright to use to cook her food..cause it is peanut oil...? I not sure if peanut oil can intro to her now due to being a highly allergenic item. what type of oil would you recommend?
3) Can we intro tomato now to her?
4) Beside her normal formula milk, can we let her drink fresh milk like HL? or add into those nestle cereals? When can we intro fresh milk to them?
Thanks for your time in answering..:)

[Littlegastronomy] Teeth is not a concerned when it comes to lumpier food. Our babies are born with teeth wrapped under their gums. They can gnaw, just make sure the food texture is soft but there’s no need to stick to porridge. You can give rice or noodles too.
I would like to ask your advise on the following.
1) Can i add oil into her food now, example frying fish strips, eggs etc? If not, when?
[Littlegastronomy] Yes you can..
2) Is the Brand Knife oil alright to use to cook her food..cause it is peanut oil...? I not sure if peanut oil can intro to her now due to being a highly allergenic item. what type of oil would you recommend?
[Littlegastronomy] No peanut oil and this is too high cholestrol as well. Use grapeseed or canola oil instead.
3) Can we intro tomato now to her?
[Littlegastronomy] Yes you can..
4) Beside her normal formula milk, can we let her drink fresh milk like HL? or add into those nestle cereals? When can we intro fresh milk to them?
[Littlegastronomy] HL is low in fats, we do want our children to be filled with the milk fats so give her FULL CREAM/FATS milk suck as PURA or MEIJI, the darker blue packaging ones. You can introduce fresh milk to a child as early as 8-10months old but you do not replace fresh milk with formula milk until the child is at least 3 years old.
HI Brenda
Thanks for your clear explanation. :) Got one more question.
1) My gal is still taking those baby nestle rice cereal of different flavours...I saw those cornflakes, cheerios, coco crunch..can we intro these type of cereal wth fresh milk to her?
2) For fresh milk, you would recommend meiji or pura, for meiji, are you refering to the bottle type ones?
3) I am having prob introducing food of a coarser texture...like currently, her porridge, i have make it less fine, thicker texture so that she can chew and added minced pork or chicken..but she will spit the porridge or meat out if it is too thick or too dry...but if i give her too watery, she also spits them out...I dun know what is the reason thus dare not intro Rice..
However, when I tried to give her a few grains to try, she loves to eat rice on its own...so in my case, how should I mixed the rice with meat and vege cause i fear she will spit out as the meat or vege together with rice might be too chunky or tough for her to chew or swallow. Can you teach me?
Thanks Brenda
Hello Stephanie,
As before, my replies are within your email below:

[Littlegastronomy] Cornflakes is fine but I’m not comfy with cheerios and coco crunch as the sugar content is quite high. I don’t like giving sugary stuff to my child. Yes you can add fresh milk or any kind of milk with such cereals.
2) For fresh milk, you would recommend meiji or pura, for meiji, are you refering to the bottle type ones?
[Littlegastronomy] I supposed there’s only one type of Meiji fresh milk available in SG’s supermarkets right? I’ve not seen in other types of packaging.. there’re 2 types of bottling, just different in quantity. But the low fat one is LIGHT BLUE while the full fat/cream one is DARK BLUE which was what I emphasized to you earlier.
[Littlegastronomy] the only way to understand your child’s problem is to keep trying, one food try at least 10 times. You haven’t even found the culprit for her spitting and you already consciously omitting rice as the other option. Unless you’re very sure that it is the texture then you work on this area. NAIL the culprit first.
However, when I tried to give her a few grains to try, she loves to eat rice on its own...so in my case, how should I mixed the rice with meat and vege cause i fear she will spit out as the meat or vege together with rice might be too chunky or tough for her to chew or swallow. Can you teach me?
[Littlegastronomy] AH HAR! I wrote my previous reply not seeing this paragraph. So to say, could it be your minced pork or whatever she was spitting out wasn’t up to her liking at THAT MOMENT? Have you tried the same dish on her for at least 10 times? If not, keep trying okk.. Children are totally unpredictible.. she might just one day love your minced pork again and a couple days later, hate it.. there’s no explanation to this attitude.. I can only say they’re simply children! Welcome to Motherhood and KEEP TRYING ok! CHEERS!
