hi brenda,

need your advise. my girl is 10+months now.

0630/0700 : 200ml milk
0730/0800 : sleep (2 to 3hrs)
1130 : porridge(abt 4tbps)
1330 : 160-180ml milk
1430/1530 : nap (1 to 2 hrs)
1630/1700 : fruits
1800 : porridge(same quantity)
1900/1930 : 100ml milk
2200 : 180-200ml milk
2230 : sleep throughout e nite

recently i have difficulties getting my girl to eat her porridge. the time getting her to finish the small bowl is getting longer. she seems to prefer drinking milk and eating snacks like puffs or fruits. she also seem to be getting thinner. how to get her to eat more?

my kitchen's usage is solely for her meals. my hubby & i don't take meals at home. the ingredients for baby's meals have to be used for 3days. that is, she will have almost the same rice porridge for 6meals. i try to vary the stock for cooking her rice porridge. i wish to have different meals for her everyday. but the ingredients will not be utilised effiently. for example, only a small part of brocolli is cut for the 2 meals a day. the rest of the brocolli will be portioned for another 2 days. pls advise how i can provide daily meals with different ingredients for her, without wasting the ingredients?

a pot is used to cook my baby's meals. the rice porridge cooked for her lunch will be left on the stove till it is time to heat up for dinner. i do not have a microwave oven. i think it is a unhealthy method that i'm using right now. so do i keep the porridge in the fridge and warm it on the stove for dinner? does warming the porridge on the stove increase the nutrients loss?

Hello mummy hui,

Basically, we all know that it is the MILK that beefs up our babies and that other foods are simply making up the other nutrients required for a growing child. So I advise that wherever, whenever possible, add milk into her other foods. At 10 months old, a baby is still very much depending on milk as the main source of food. So for example, instead of giving her porridge, you can replace it with cereal or the ‘ang mo’ porridge. Rice cereal itself is just another form of porridge(Chinese), fortified rice meal. So replace porridge with rice cereal, couscous meal or oatmeal cereal and add milk to beef up the dish, instead of using water. Replace one of the porridge meal (I suggest the 1800hrs porridge feed) to rice/oatmeal cereal.

Also, at 10 months old, our babies are going through grow spurts. They are learning to crawl, teething, some even try talking, simply in becoming a toddler. All these affect a child’s weight. Their needs are drastically different now comparing to a few months old baby. And a good diet is not just about food, it’s a holistic approach which consists of a baby’s daily activities(sleep plus play). Is she being stimulated well enough, both mentally and physically in order for her to have a good appetite?

Who does the cooking for her then? And is this person the main caretaker for your child? Taking care of a growing baby is not a part time job or a selective task role. In order for a child to grow properly, the care taker has to take the FULL responsibility, not just by cooking her meals. You’ll need to ensure that your baby has the right/enough activities throughout the day then you’ll have a healthily growing child. If you can’t assume this full responsibility, pay someone who can.

To many mothers, they readily point the finger at food intake or food tastiness for a baby who’s not putting on ideal weight. That is a misconception, a growing child needs more than just food. I hope you understand what I’m driving at.

In 6 months time, when your child is more aware of the environment, she’s going to demand more. Like having her meals together with her parents, therefore I urge you to start cooking for yourself and your husband as well. Your child will then look forward to her meal times as she knows that when she eats, all of you will be eating with her. That’s an enjoyment itself, which we Chinese preach.

Once a veg is uprooted, they lose up to 50% of its nutrients. And if it’s further store for more days used, the nutrients will lose more naturally. Freezing the veg can help preserve some nutrients. So the only way to ensure that your child is having fresh produce every day, is to use freshly bought ingredients and by not wasting it, means you cook more than you baby meal. There’s absolutely no short-cut or cost-effective way to do this.

Yes, heat kills nutrients so the more the food is being heated/warmed, the more nutrients will be lost.

Hope this helps… (=
